Feb. 23, 2011 Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina junior Blaire Minter was today named the Southern Conference's Women's Golfer of the Week for all spring competition through February 22. With a fourth-place finish at the Edwin Watts / Kiawah Island Classic, Minter guided WCU to a fourth-place team finish out of the 33 teams in the largest collegiate women's golf collegiate tournament field in the country. The team finish was the best-ever for WCU at the annual event. For Minter, the weekly honor from the conference is the second of her career, also garnering accolades in mid-March of 2010. She is only one of five WCU women's golfers to ever receive weekly plaudits from the SoCon, and is the third all-time to receive multiple honors. Minter fired a three-round, two-over par 218 -- tied for the seventh-best, 54-hole score in school history -- to claim fourth at the event on Kiawah Island, S.C. It was the sixth career top five - third this season - and 10th career top ten finish for the Marietta, Ga., native. Minter, who was among the leaders the entire three-day event, entered the final two holes tied atop the leader board before placing inside the top five. Two of Minter's three rounds were under par, including a two-under 70 in the second round. She was the top finisher among all SoCon golfers in the event which included five teams. Western Carolina, ranked 70th nationally in the most recent GolfStat rankings, returns to action this weekend as it travels to the Kinderlou Forest Challenge, hosted by Kennesaw State at the Kinderlou Forest Golf Club in Valdosta, Ga. The three-day, 54-hole event begins on Sunday, Feb. 27 and concludes on Tuesday, March 1. All 14 teams in the field are ranked inside the nation's top 100 according to GolfStat rankings including 12th-ranked Georgia and SoCon-foe, Chattanooga, which is 38th.
